The second book in the Dexter series. Dexter is being followed around by Seareant Doakes which means Dexter's dark passenger doesn't get to come out and play. Instaed he is stuck being a couch potato at his girlfriend Rita's house. Then Dexter and his sister get called in to a gruesome scene and his sister's new boyfriend disappears and she insists that Dexter find him. I enjoyed the dark humor of the book and like that Lindsay can make you feel like you are inside the mind of a serial killer.

Dexter is truly an original and Lindsay does amazing work with him. I'm generally over serial killer books as a rule because there are limits to how creative you can be with the method of death; Dexter works because it's about the man, not the method. His wit tends to sneak up on you unexpectedly and makes you laugh all the harder for it. For someone who gleefully admits that he doesn't get emotions, humor is one thing he does understand - Dexter's affection for the phrase "ten-four" is one of t ...more

I love the whole concept of the Dexter character - a serial killer who kills "bad" people. I love the backstory of how he came to be, the concept of the "Harry Code", his sister and really everything about Dexter. I just didn't care too much for this story. I wanted more Dexter and less book of the week villain. I'm also saddened by what happens to Dexter's relationship with his nemesis from the first book.

Nevertheless, I will read the remaining books in the series, and go back to watching Dexte
