Kinsey Millhone is hired for a day by Michael Sutton. Michael is convinced he saw two men burying a body when he was 6 years old. 21 years later he's sure it was the body of a kidnapped girl and he's just recovered his memories of that day. Kinsey does some research and the police do find something but it's not a childs body. Kinsey being her usual tenacious self keeps digging into the case. There is also a subplot involving Kinsey's aunt and grandmother. This is the first book in the series I r

I wasn't sure whether to give this two or three stars, as I found it very uneven. The parts set in the 1960s, about a hippy couple and a tragic mystery surrounding a lost child, are often powerfully written. However, the same can't be said for the 1980s sections about Kinsey Millhone, which are largely a rehash of what has already been said so many times before. I read this book happily. I don't know whether it is better than Grafton's last book, or that it's been so long since I've read Grafton or Muller, and U is for Undertow took me back to the days when I discovered women mystery writers. Another great mystery from Grafton (though I must say, I could do w/ a little less attention to what characters are wearing). However, like many of them, the title has very little to do with the plot. There is a small throwaway paragraph describing an undertow in the latter half of the book, but this could easily be ripped from the book and not be missed. Too bad she's on U - this one would be better titled "D is for Dig" or "M is for Memory," since the plot revolves around a man's memory of see

Grafton never disappoints me. In this one events of 30 years ago come back to haunt a couple of teenagers who should have known better. Grafton proves you don't need to rely on modern technology to provide a good mystery.

Grafton is definitely ON in this latest installment in the adventures of Kinsey Millhone. Well done, Ms. Grafton! Kinsey fans, run out and get it! I don't want to say anything else because it's so new.
