The first half of this book was dreadful - full of bad news, but on Page 180 it turned around and got much more interesting. It still contained more sad stories than I would imagine could fit in one book, (must have been the point) but what saved it was Reggie, the 16 year old orphan nanny who is a fantastic character. The story really got moving in the second half and she becomes the main character. Also Sadie the dog played a great supporting role!! Read Case Histories first for a better kate

I picture Atkinson's novels like a ballroom of dancers, filled with people twirling around and switching partners in a carefully choreographed pattern - her storylines weave together with such perfect harmony that they seem both preordained but surprising. This third Jackson Brodie is no less - luminous and lovely, from one of my favorite mystery writers.
