This was an accomplished debut novel that grabbed me from the first page to the unexpected finish. While the story read like a detective novel, it definitely has a feminine feel as it concentrates on the bond between the sisters, and the other female characters. I enjoyed how the suspense was built around the characters and builds one fact at a time. The author’s skills as a screen writer show as she vividly paints each scene. Many times I felt I was intruding into the intimate life of Beatrice ...more

An unusually structured thriller told as a letter from the narrator to her missing sister. Plenty of possible suspects for the crime. Quite poignant as regards the relationship between the two sisters. Very cleverly written.

Good mystery about a woman's search for her missing sister. Lupton does a nice job with telling a traditional story in a non-traditional way. I also found the story to be more relevant than standard mystery novels. I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it to my GR buddies. ...more

It's well-constructed, dramatic, potent, and moving, especially if you're in the right space for it. The good twist in the end surprised me. ("I should have had a sister," my mother

I am absolutely bowled over by this book! To simply categorize this book as mystery / suspense would be a big mistake. The mystery was intriguing and well done, but the real depth and beauty of the novel come from the relationship between the 2 sisters, Tess and Bee. The family's grieving through the current tragedy is painfully poignant and the narrator's self examination is extraordinary. The character development was brilliant. I cried at more than one point in the novel because I just felt t ...more

Very skillfully written book, more a character sketch than a mystery though, the mystery surrounding Tess's death adds to the drama. ...more
