What Members Thought

Although the story was slow-moving, I learned a great deal about Turkey. The stories of the various inhabitants of the small village town brought them to life. Christians and Muslims lived together happily until the war. The war changed the lives of all; and at the end the Christians were sent away to Greece.

I really enjoyed the characters and description of life in the small village and read with a sense of protection for them about all the war developments that would eventually arrive at their doorstep. The parallels between the first of 20th century and our time are frustrating, as it only proves that history repeats itself and yet we still allow it. The parts I did not enjoy, however, were the narrative history of the war and the detailed description of military campaigns. I was more interested
