I give 3.5 stars for this book and another 0.5 stars for its idea.

I mean - this book is chilling and all, and many said it's still relevant to this day (I agree). But one thing I don't really like is the way this books is written - there are so many vague plots and loopholes that I found unsatisfactory. It's not as if the plot is mysterious, it's just very unclear. Why the situation happened, how it happened, and all the explanations that I wished Atwood would give just a bit more, just to make

I want you to kiss me, said the Commander. Well, of course something came before that. Such requests never come flying out of the blue.

Yes this is a classic and I've never read it! But now I finally have! In 1986, when this was published, I was in college, too busy reading textbooks on Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and Calculus to make time for a lot of current sci fi (I managed a few choice books ... but not this one, obviously).

Originally read this in 2013; re-read in 2018 while watching Season 1 of The Handmaid's Tale.

It was more compelling the second time around, perhaps because it was made more complex by comparison with the TV show. The show has updated the novel in all the right ways, as well as altered a few characters to make them more compelling. (Offred is smarter, wiley in the show; her Wife is younger, prettier, meaner; her Commander is younger. All of these changes increase the tension dramatically.)

Started out slow. Really built momentum as it progressed. The writing was fantastic. Good for a book group. I am somewhat surprised that it is being read in high school due to the mature themes and sexual references.

Especially disturbing to read this during the current bout of woman-hating. Beautiful, difficult, terrifying book. I need to read it again already.
