Agh! Wonderfully complex and gripping. Leo Demidov, apparently invunerable, goes form Chekist to Militia to Gulag via Vory to counterrevolutionaryrevolutionary I think. His past just wont go away, and I had the most paranoid dreams ever after this book. Imagining life in this time in place is beyond scary, but a great read.

This a a great book, the second in a trilogy. I'm torn between three and four stars, so I'm giving it three for now, but may change it.
