Agh! Wonderfully complex and gripping. Leo Demidov, apparently invunerable, goes form Chekist to Militia to Gulag via Vory to counterrevolutionaryrevolutionary I think. His past just wont go away, and I had the most paranoid dreams ever after this book. Imagining life in this time in place is beyond scary, but a great read.

Smith gets a lot of interesting mileage out his exploration of whether or not people can change or atone for their past transgressions - he captures the Catch-22 of life in Soviet Russia perfectly.
