As seems to be a habit with me, I picked this book up because I'd watched the first episode of the new tv series and decided I didn't want to wait to find out what happened / wanted to see how the original unfolded. Grossman has an addictive style of writing -- I kept reading way past when I was supposed to if I wanted to get to bed on time / not be late for work / not miss my bus stop.

There are lots of parts I really, really love about this book. I love the premise and the concept. I love the wonderful descriptions of places I wish I could go. And I love that the protagonists are humans.
And yet, I was really underwhelmed by how human the characters were. Somewhere in the middle it became druggy, drunken, city-life melodrama and I became SUPER BORED. I really enjoyed this book. It was quite different from what I had anticipated and I found the pacing to be somewhat unconvetional but overall I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure I would have been satisfied if it was intended to be a standalone story. Knowing there was a sequel made reading it a different experience than it would have been otherwise.

Got to the beginning of Part 2 (p. 227) when I had to return it to the library. At times it was tedious but I'm still curious how it ends.
