4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. At the outset, it reminded me a bit of The Shadow of the Wind with its atmospheric tone with a touch of suspense and creepiness.

No brain-straining required here; this is an easy, read-it-in-one-sitting book. The story is engaging, fairly fast-paced,and has the hallmarks of previous books of Mosse's with settings in France, supernatural and historic connections, and a mystery solved by the end, with a bit of religious persecution and some interesting exploration of the nature of the grieving process. Following Freddie who still grieves for his bother who died during WWi. Freddie drives to southern France for a holiday when a twist of fate brings him into contact with the ghost of a woman who has suffered even greater tragedy than he. Interesting more than creepy.

The Winter Ghosts makes for a fast, cozy winter read. I especially loved reading a story set in the Pyrenees region of France. Supernatural forces, slightly mad men, gruff uber-rural French townfolk, and lots of snow. While not earthshattering in its contents, it was an enjoyable read.
