Really well done, so I probably should give 5 stars, but it didn't quite grab me, so it was a 3-star read for me despite the author's skill, polish, knowledge, and thorough research. To be fair, I listened to the audiobook so it was too easy to tune out when things got technical...! Interesting, would recommend.

Wow wow wow! I learned so much from this book. Dense science but reads like a novel. I know more about cancer now than I have gathered in almost a decade in nursing. Not depressing, an history of the evolution of medical understanding and treatment blended with personal stories. Six stars. READ THIS BOOK!

A thorough and approachable history of cancer. I wonder, though, what it may have become if it were written by a historian, or someone with cultural studies training. It's written by an oncologist, and is of course detailed, caring, in depth. But the story is told through two frames: personal histories of patients and major actors in the history of cancer, and clinical trial after clinical trial.
