I read this book about a month ago but never got around to writing a review for it. And now that I'm playing catch-up on my reviews, I find that I can't really recall much about this book.

And this, really, just about sums it all up. The Flight of Gemma Hardy didn't make that much of an impression on me (unlike the one Livesey book I'd read years ago, the emotionally compelling Eva Moves the Furniture, which I still have a fairly good sense of). Thoroughly cozy and charming. Lots of walks in the country, along cliffs, bike rides, birds, boats, cups of tea... and a seductive story.

"Do you know," he said, "that there are people who can't go near high places not because they're afraid of heights but because they feel such a lure to jump?"

I may be the only person that hadn't read Jane Eyre, so I wasn't influenced by "was it true to the inspiration". I enjoyed this book & it's what I chose to read from noon - 4:00 today & finished it. The end was a bit of a letdown (no spoiler) but the story itself moved along. Good read on a wintry day. ...more

A little slow - supposed to be a modern day story based on Jane Eyre - but Gemma did not have the charisma of Jane and the prose was not as gorgeous as the original. Lots of scenes were just ho hum.
