I enjoyed this cosy mystery, which isn't too cloyingly sweet - I liked the bakery setting and large pet cat, though I skipped the recipes! At the start I found the heroine, Hannah, rather too judgmental for my liking about everyone around her, but either she mellowed during the book or I did.
The author also kept me guessing about the murderer's identity. I will carry on with the series, but will read the next one rather than listening to it on audio, as I found it very slow in that format. ...more

Hannah Swensen owns and runs a shop selling cookies. She finds the local milk deliveryman shot in his truck in the alley behind her shop. Hannah is then asked by her brother-in-law who is a police officer to help with the investigation. That's the part of the book I found hard to swallow. I aloso thought the murderer was a bit silly but I like Hannah.

I listened to the audio book. I enjoyed the story but I don't think I relate well to the narrator. The voices for most of the secondary female characters are too syrupy or fake. If you like Nancy Atherton, then I would recommend this series. For something a little less sentimental I would recommend Susan Wittig Albert.

I just could NOT with this book. She is so relentlessly judgy!! Even after the dead body was found (clutching a chocolate chip cookie!) I did not care at all. DNF in chapter 2. I didn't love the audiobook narrator, either, her voices for the different characters grated on me.

Cozy mysteries usually make me groan audibly, but this one had enough mentions of coffee and cookies to make me move past all the "giiiirl, staahhhp" moments. And I noted the recipes because easy cookies (though that's not my image of a black and white).
