Late dark stuff from a master. The majority of the stories (all marvels of story-telling economy) seem to revolve around the art of knife fighting. There were times I almost thought of shelving this collection with Horror, but that would have been inaccurate, and it would have been wrong to place any genre limitation on these grim tales of honor and revenge, set against the often brutal Argentine landscape and its chaotic history. Borges scrive nella sua prefazione a questi racconti:
"Ho cercato, non so con quanto successo, di redigere racconti lineari. Non mi azzarderò a dire che sono semplici; sulla terra non c'è una sola pagina, una sola parola che lo sia, giacchè tutte postulano l'universo, il cui attributi più noto è la complessità".
'Il manoscritto di Brodie' contiene undici racconti brevi dettati da un Borges ormai settantunenne e cieco all'anziana madre; l'ultimo di questi dà il titolo al volume.
