Very lyrical book, with a dreamy first half and a jolting, suspenseful second. The descriptions of west Texas are spot-on (and I am guessing that the terrain doesn't change too much immediately over the border, so this could be right for McCarthy's prose on northern Mexico as well). The landscape was so eerie and the ripping away of innocence so jarring, that I finished the book and felt the world was bleak. This book just did not interest me, and the style in which it was written was just awful. It was so confusing! The story (modern-day western) about a guy who rides from Texas to Mexico and what happens to him there did not interest me at all either. So, needless to say I will not be reading the other books in the series.
