I've decided to read one Wharton novel a year. This year's read was Ethan Frome. Ah, Wharton's books feel like a pair of comfortable old shoes. Where would we be without someone in an unhappy marriage who falls for someone else, but they can't be together? Although this novel provides a familiar theme for Wharton, there's a pretty big twist in this one that makes it unique. The writing is excellent, the story flows at a nice pace, and the reader feels for poor Ethan, who just can't seem to catch ...more

I read this years ago, I honestly can't say when, but this book evoked images that I still remembered before reading again. The images I have of this book are winter, cold, snow, bleak. I will always think of Frome from the first sight the engineer had of him.

it was the careless powerful look he had, in spite of a lameness checking each step like the jerk of a chain.

This is the book that makes you think twice (spoiler alert) about sledding in the winter. A concise and elegant tragedy worthy of Sophocles.

A plodding story about a weathered man and the disappointments he carries with him every day.

Ugh! If not for the BTRBYD list, I would have put his one down and walked away. Helpless characters that make dumb choices. Every 10 pages or so I was bored and put this away...took it on like an assignment and thank goodness it is short so I could maintain the discipline to finish it. I don't recommend this, except perhaps to remind people that we can make better choices to improve our own destinies. ...more
