What Members Thought

This was dreadful. The story was flatly ridiculous; I read it thinking it was an absurdist novel which also played with tropes, but there needed to be a payoff at the end. But no, it ended in all seriousness. Even for an unreliable narrator, you could only accept his version of events if you assumed that he was nuts. A tedious read and I’m tired of Ishiguro’s tic of introducing an element only to explain it later. Ho-hum. His is one of those Nobels where I’m left scratching my head.

Deeply moving, and I'm continually amazed at the way Ishiguro breathes life into his characters in subtle ways - they're always a bit myopic about themselves, which does more than a thousand descriptions ever could to make someone seem real.
