I only read The Awakening in this volume. I was reading this for a discussion group, so stopped there for now before going on to the other stories. I found this to be a very touching story of a woman awakening to herself. Controversial at the time (1899), it questions motherhood, marriage, independence, and the self-awareness and fulfillment of women. I purposefully wanted to read it to compare to my recent read of Madame Bovary by Flaubert. I don't find it to be as similar as reported by past c ...more
