What Members Thought

Lovely story about a group of people who live on Cannery Row. Stienbeck is amazing in his descrptions of the both the town and its people, who hover between the tragic and the beautiful as they live out their lives during a time when few of them had the economic means for much. What I also enjoyed was the tremendous sense of community that they had even though each of them was very different from the other. With Doc at the center of it all, reading this book was a tremendous pleasure to me.

I've become a big fan of Steinbeck's style and his gift for capturing that undefinable mesh that holds a community together. His language isn't necessarily flowery or showy, but you absolutely pick up the sense that each word is carefully chosen to evoke something very specific.

I haven't read much Steinbeck, but this was an interesting one after having been to Monterrey peninsula and seen the place he wrote about. It is a lot more upscale these days.
