What Members Thought

The writing in this book is superb. The marking of a great book is when the author is able to make the reader feel like one or more of the characters. I felt that way when I read the Age of Innocence, and I felt that way when I read this book. The suburban angst that exists among the characters in the novel made me uncomfortable when reading this book. No one is happy with their lives, and the tragic ending makes this a depressing read, even though the writing is fantastic.

This is a difficult one for me to review. I found the first part (the play) lengthy, excruciating and depressing. So much so that I put the book down and when I came back to it some weeks later had to read it again to remember it. It was still excruciating, but then I began to understand where this was going- major dysfunction under the "happy families" veneer, and the preoccupation with being seen to be fine even when the world was falling apart.
