I'm not sure how to go about reviewing a Pynchon novel. Probably I shouldn't even try, so I'll jot down some impressions, etc. Up until 49, I've only read V -- which I admired. The other Pynchon books have frustrated me, but I'm beginning to think it is a matter of approach and frame of mind. And also size. Lugging those phone books, Mason & Dixon and Against the Day, into work for what would probably be at least two weeks, seemed a drag that undermined my repeated attempts. I may put them on my

Ok, so I don't know that I am one that "gets" this book. I do admit that I like the WWII references, the conspiracy element, and the California setting. I will also admit that I plan on re-reading this book at some point. Will I read anything else by Pynchon? I have no idea, although I do have a beautiful copy of Gravity's Rainbow on my shelf.

(2010) After reading this, I can see why Helene Hanff could never feel passionate about people and places that never existed. ...Once you get into the rhythm, the reading is not so hard but at a certain point, maybe half way through, the good parts are gone and you wonder why you are still reading, other than to find out what happens. Chaos, confusion, miscommunication--the joke is on me, right? I set this book aside many times to try to figure this out, but seem to have been mislead and dealing with a haze, just as its protagonist. I finally read others' reviews after I gave up on making sense of it myself. Very glad I didn't have to read this in high school or college.
