4.5 stars; wow, this book was excellent. Hillary Jordan tells the story from the perspective of multiple characters. On audio, each character was read by a different person, which gave even more of a voice to these people. The story is brutal; it's set in the Mississippi Delta post-WWII, where relations between the races had not nearly advanced as it had abroad. This book is exactly what I was looking for. It takes place in the Deep South after World War II and deals with a lot of intense issues, as you can imagine. It was one of those books that was really easy to read, and just a good story. It is told from the perspective of six different characters, which I always love. I guess what I liked most about the characters is that they all seemed very real.

Definitely one of those books where nothing quite turns out very well for anyone, but utterly appropriate to the time and place Jordan chose - her unsanitized view of race relations in the post-WWII South draws you deep into her story and leaves you with troubling questions to ponder.
