I loved this book from first page to last. The story was well-written, interesting and satisfying. Franklin gives an excellent portrait of life in 1980s and then modern day Mississippi and creates memorable characters who will stay with me for awhile. Interestingly, I recently listened to Mudbound by Hillary Jordan , which was also set in the deep South, albeit post-WWII. Mudbound is a much more disturbing and violent depiction of racism so it was harder to get through than CLCL, even though all racism makes me sick t ...more

I read the entire novel on a loooong plane ride during which the cabin lights were off for most part (I love the built-in light in my Kindle cover!) - yes, it had hooked me, and I couldn't rest without finding out what would happen to loser Larry and shirker Silas.

There isn't really much of a mystery though there are a couple of murders; the reader is not taxed by the urgent need to find the killer, because he is so easy to spot. What keeps the reader going, instead, are the alternating perspect

I read this book because I heard it was a well written mystery/thriller. It is hard to find books like that. Unfortunately, the book was not well written, nor was it very thrilling or mysterious. Not as bad as some, but overall unremarkable.

I really appreciate the complexity here - it's less about the mystery but more about the complicated reactions people have not only to crime but the everyday ills of life. Larry and Silas are both richly developed characters that plausibly behave as the young boys they were and the men they are, and the intertwined threads of their stories will keep you hooked until the end. ...more

Phenomenal book. Loved it loved it loved it -- the kind of book where I almost wished my slooooow train from the Bronx was longer (almost!) so I could read more.
