Erica
One of Washington Irving's lesser-known books now, but it was a sensation in the 19th century. I liked the first half better than the second--the first half is Irving touring Spain and the Alhambra Palace, getting to know the people, and spending a lot of good time describing nature, flowers, the way women dress, etc. The second half is full of retold folktales. There's probably good cultural interest in that too, but it wasn't much to my taste.
Well worth it!
