This book made me well up and cry - not a deep sob, but enough where I had to blow my nose as a result of it. I really liked this story about a girl who grew up in foster care and learned through one of her caretakers about the language of flowers. Diffenbaugh actually created the flower dictionary that appears in the appendix of the book and that figures as a key point in the story while she was writing it - so cool! I like flowers and so I picked up this book without knowing much about it. It’s about a girl who grew up in and out of foster care and in state custody. She struggled growing up. The story alternates between her experiences as a 9-10 year old and as an 18-19 year old. She did have a hard life, but it stressed me out that she made everything worse by assuming the worst. What a lovely book. The story flits between the present day and Victoria's childhood with chapters ending on cliff-hangers which I found really compelling. If I'd been reading it at a weekend or on holiday I could imagine reading it in one sitting.
