I thought I would like this old favorite a lot more than I did. I don't think this one made the transition from the 19th century to the 21st century very well at all. The book is about twice as long as it needs to be, thanks to wandering and bewildering dialogue. The story itself is unlikely; Cooper would have us believe that the Hurons were extremely lenient with their prisoners, letting them wander about unraped and untortured and permitting them to be rescued time and again. You know, it reminded me of those old western adventure comics that I used to pick from the shelves of boy relatives. I quickly changed them to Batman and Superman. Like I did with this one, quickly changed to another book (I'd been reading it for days but I never made it through halfway). It was just too boring for me to handle. A more engaging story and the message would have come across better, too.

I wasn't entirely sure what to think of this book. I liked it well enough; Cooper's descriptions are sometimes quite beautiful, and I liked the veneer of the characters. Unfortunately, I never felt that he drew his characters deeply enough, and the fact that the language is often both racist and prolix is just displeasing. I'm glad I read it, but it might have been a better use of time to just stick to the (quite different, mind you) movie.
