Everyone read this in high school, but I recently reread it. What a selfish complainer Holden Caulfield is. Why was this a great work of literary genius?

I absolutely hated this book! I don't know why exactly, but I couldn't stand it, not the writing and especially not Holden... blech ...more

I decided to re-read this book being that it was one of my favorites in high school. I'm about 2/3 of the way through now and it's funny how a few years can totally change your perspective on something. First of all, I've read more and seen more classic movies so this time around I understand a lot more of the references to popular culture in the late 1940s as well as the popular literature references.

I'm also finding Holden's obsession with phony's really interesting. He's obviously rejecting
