I'm probably being oversensitive considering the book was written in 1940 and the attitudes between blacks and caucasians was different then, but though I agree with the authors sentiments on how whites treated blacks at that time, I think I got his point loud and clear without the extra verbiage. ...more

I read this in high school and absolutely despised it. It is impossible to feel sympathy for the main character or to get involved in the plot line. That being said, I was young when I read this, so perhaps I didn't get the whole picture. I am not against re-reading it, but will say my first time around, it was one of the few books I absolutely hated in high school. ...more
