Wish I had read this classic long ago.

A beautiful, lyrical novel--in my memory, Hurston's most accessible and transcendent. Perfect garden and nature metaphors. So many lovely phrasings and quotes (only a few here):
"Put me down easy, Janie, I'm a cracked plate."
"There are years that ask questions and years that answer."
"It was like seeing your sister turn into a 'gator. A familiar strangeness."
"Ah sho hope you ain't lak uh possum--de older you gits, de less sense yuh got."
"Half gods are worship

Janie is a character you wont easily forget. She is genuine and earnest and she lives within a compassionate tale that "celebrates rather than moralizes" (Henry Gates) life's events and people's behavior and decisions. Hurston's style is distinct of any author I have read. Her prose is beautiful and enjoyable read aloud. Hurston was a groundbreaking African American feminist writer of the 1930s and, thankfully, more read now than ever. ...more
