How did I wait this long to read this book? Written in the 1970s, it holds up well (other than the absence of technology, of course). Butler's description of both the physical and mental agony of slavery is stunning. Showing this era from the perspective of a modern day person truly brings home the truth that this "Southern way of life" was a deeply evil environment that infected everything and everyone. I would make this required reading in every high school.

This book was a little out of my reading comfort zone. However, I am so glad that I read it as it was fantastic and I enjoyed every page.
