This book isn't what I expected at all. First of all, it's NOT science fiction! I've seen it on so many "Greatest Sci Fi" lists (see above) over the years that I was, well, expecting sci fi! I thought "the Kindred" were aliens from a future race that come back in time to the slave-holding days of the south, and ... mess with stuff in some ominous fashion.

This is a really solid book, packed full of good ideas and compelling meta-narratives about slavery and love. Reading it is horrid - it's back to the victim's point of view this time (unlike The Clockwork Orange), with graphic descriptions of lynchings, hangings, whippings, and gruesome psychological games that aren't any more comforting for being grounded in an odd kind of connection between the abuser and the abused.

This book follows the story of Dana, an African-American woman living in the 1970s who is suddenly transported back in time to antebellum Maryland. She travels back and forth in time multiple times, and on one occasion her husband, Kevin, a white man, is sent back with her.
