Even though I could actually follow the plot, I really don't much like spy novels I guess. This one has all th recommendations but I just couldn't really get into it.

A fabulous combination of political thriller and police procedural. A calculating, ice-cold professional assassin--code name Jackal--is hired by a French terrorist group to kill President de Gaulle in 1963 Paris. The French secret service gets a grain of information about the plot, and the job to track down "le Chacal" is eventually thrust into the hands of an unassuming deputy police commissioner. I really wanted to enjoy this more than I did, but I kept getting jarred out of the story by that bugaboo of thrillers, the overly detailed narration. The pages on pages of technical description don't illuminate things for me much as a reader as I tend to have a hard time extrapolating written schematics into a visual image, and it's so prevalent here that it really bogged me down.

An amazing book. Since we know de Gaulle died in his bed, the end of the book is known from the start.
But the way in which the set-up of the assassination attempt against him and the manhunt by the police are detailed is just fantastic. Fast paced, well described, good characterisation, an excellent book!

Forsyth is brilliant. This book is one of his earlier works, which tells the story of an assassin who has been hired to kill the President of France.
