Had I realized the depth to which speculative elements feature in the plot of this one I probably would have turned away - epic fantasy's not really my thing, and this isn't really polished enough to overcome my innate resistance. While not the epic adventure that Shogun was, it was still an engrossing and transporting read!! Already have the second one!
Now I have actually walked on a "nightingale floor". It is quite an experience.
