George Eliot chose an earlier period 1799 - 1808 for this novel in a rural setting. Lots of very nice dialog written in country vernacular. The reproduction of Methodists seems credibly good, to my eye. And the morals in this book come from all ends of the religious spectrum and even those betwixt and between. Good thoughts on vengeance by Reverend Irwine and put into practice by Adam Bede.

I always call this "the poor man's Tess" and the double humor of that term is that I also disliked Tess of the D'Urbervilles. That being said, I read both novels at the ripe old age of 17 and so may not have yet gained an education and appreciation for the tragedy of circumstances for so many vulnerable women of other times and/or places.
