An enchanting read! I was instantly drawn into the 18th century world of the Dutch East India Trading Company and Nagasaki, Japan, which is no easy feat! The subtle story lines of race, nationalism, and honor mixed well with an epic love story. This is not a cheesy, chic-lit love story, but one about the realities of love.

great read with a not so familiar historical background. Love the Japanese vs Dutch vibe, and some glimpses of Indonesia (aka Batavia) made this book more interesting personally.

A story told in three parts. An exploration of morality and a book that is mysterious to the last page. To say too much would be to give it away but it is a compelling and enjoyable story.
