I am re-reading this because I want to read the sequel Dance Dance Dance, and realized that I should read this again.
I am not sure that I can ever do a good summary of any Murakami book, so I won't try here. There is something about his books that keep me coming back to his writing.

Brilliant. Weird enough to keep the reader wondering, clear enough to help the story flow. Just what you'd expect from Murakami. I couldn't put it down.

This was a re-read for me. I had originally read Dance, Dance, Dance before A Wild Sheep Chase, and that was confusing. Murakami's third novel, his first mature work, includes many of the motifs of his later work and some of the flaws, but in less noticeable forms. For instance, the two women characters are both sexualized ciphers, but to a less noticeable extent than, for instance, 1Q84. While I'm a fan of Murakami's work, this one is just....weird. I think the themes here are buried so deep that I, at least in my holiday-eating-coma state, can't even begin to parse or understand them. The basic idea is compelling, but I walk away from this feeling more dumb than edified.
