Gave it five stars because it was an intense, unforgettable read. But I loved The Paying Guests much more. The one way this novel fell down for me was in the romance between Maud and Sue. I felt like it was much more a novel about tricky mother-daughter relationships than about the heat and chemistry between the two women, which I never really felt.
