I knew this play's reputation for being amazingly gory, but, even so, it is gorier than I expected, and at times tips over into violent farce. I had been meaning to watch a film of it but am now a bit scared to do so because of the sheer level of violence - I'm rather squeamish, and am aware that 100-plus members of the audience fainted during a production at The Globe.

One summer when I was 12 or 13, before SmartPhones, before The Internet was ubiquitous, before TiVo, I was bored. At home.
This is how I found myself picking up the works of William Shakespeare (a two volume set) and opening it up to the first play: Titus Adronicus. "I should read Shakespeare, I thought to myself." This year I am trying to read all of Shakespeare's plays in chronological order. This is the fourth one.
Apparently they stopped putting it on in the 17th century because the audiences wouldn't put up with all the bloodshed and horrible deaths. Luckily, I have read some of Shakespeare's later plays, or I would be stopping the project now. I am not very impressed with these early plays.
