Overall, an amusing read that kept me well-entertained throughout. By the end, however, the story kind of petered out for me, because I felt as if Morgenstern's way of wrapping it all up really didn't fit with the better part of the book. Some of it just didn't make sense to me.
Props though to Morgenstern for creating an amazing world of which I would have loved to have been a part as a spectator. Her creativity alone makes this book a standout for 2011, and I can see why so many people love it. ...more

Yes, the imagery in this story was definitely magic of its own, and yes, I did have some fantastic dreams from going directly to sleep while reading--but honestly, it took me too long to finish it, and there were moments when I was wishing for more substance. I like the way it ended though, lately I've been bored by the novels that use magic and end in complete tragedy; I guess my soul just needs more resolution, and this book definitely ended with a good one. Kinda reminded me of the movie ~The

I loved this book, but it is hard to pinpoint why. The real world and the fantastic overlap in a believable way. The descriptions of the atmosphere of the circus were rich and detailed without getting tedious. The plot is not strictly linear, but it does follow a certain logic. Except for the antagonists, all of the characters are likeable or at least admirable without being Pollyannas.

Against the backdrop of a mysterious circus, two young magicians must square off in an age-old duel fueled by the rivalry of their respective fathers. But matters are complicated by romantic entanglements. A good book certain to appeal to fans of the genre, but I inevitably find magic-themed stories incredibly frustrating. Unlike, say, SF that sets down technological parameters as to what can and cannot be achieved, in magic-based narratives all bets are off. Shits happens, people die and then,

A tale about dreams, magic and the power of imagination. Good entertainment and pace although I could not get too many realistic points of reference, but I think it is just me being skeptic as usual.
First read was for the eBook original edition in English borrowed from NYPL.
Second read was for the German translation, audio version borrowed from Buecherein Wien.
My opinion has not chaged. The German is a bit better I guess for the flowery discription but love scenes are terribly corny.

This book evoked fond memories of interactive theater and small circus troupes I've experienced over the years. In a rough year, I needed to read a little bit of magic, even if I had crazy dreams that didn't feel like sleep for the whole week.

I loved this book. The story had so many things going on, the time period and content was interesting and different (it's hard to find things that are "different" these days), and the language was beautiful to read. Highly recommended.

Narrated by Jim Dale of HP fame so I'm excited going in.
2 hours into the book: I'm so sorry Jim Dale. It's not you, it's the book.
After the child abuse and the trying-hard meet-cute with slow progress on the plot, I'm DNF-ing. ...more
