I read this in 9th grade and it was very interesting plot-wise, but I preferred The Odyssey.
In the meantime, quite a few men I know love this book. Maybe they find Pip relatable? While I do think this book is one of Dickens' strongest in terms of construction I think he should have stuck with his original ending and I *still* think it's overrated. I will try it again one day to see if I like it any better, but I just love so many other Dickens' books so much more than this one (even if they are ...more

I almost thought of giving this only two stars but towards the end it did get better and kind of bittersweet. It wasn't overall a memorable read. I missed grand details so typical of Dickens and more engaging story with fascinating characters. Pip especially had me yawning and was left a bit two dimensional. On the other hand, I liked Ms Havisham's character and how her house was described. So interesting yet sadly a very minor character.

To put it mildly, Great Expectations it was- were my expectations met? Not really.
I gave this book a chance. And no, don't confuse me with someone who just doesn't like books from times long ago. Its not the "oh you just don't understand- times were different long ago.
