Review on the fly. I thought I had read this many years ago, and I'm certain I started it since the first 50 pages or so seemed familiar. But then things started getting different, and it was really a true gothic treat. That said, calling the novel "gothic" doesn't do Shelly justice, since Frankenstein at its heart (horrific murders aside) is a novel of ideas. Shelly can also be a wonderfully descriptive writer. I found this classic tedious to get through.

Sometimes you read a classic and think "What's the big deal?". Other times you read a classic and immediately feel a connection and an understanding to the timeless quality that makes a classic. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is one of the latter books for me.

The 11-year-old and I decided to give this 202-year-old tale a try for our Halloween season read. We really enjoyed it. He gave it 4 stars because he was hoping for a different ending. I give it 5 because it kept us engaged and guessing until the end. Beautifully-written, this story offers much to contemplate and discuss.

This book is in the top 10 of her English teacher's favorites. As it was also on several book lists I am working through, I signed up for Serial Reader app snippets. I am sure I would not have read this if it weren't delivered in 20 minute reading chunks. I am not going to analyze the literary elements of this, just sharing my reaction of how I was confused at the start, not expecting a story within a story.
