I can't believe I took so long to get around to reading this. Actually, it's probably a good thing that I waited, since Kim is not an easy read. Kipling's prose is gorgeous, often with the density of poetry. What a great writer. ...more

Kipling's ability to create authentic settings and characters is what I enjoy most about his works. Kimball O'Hara is a mischievous boy who befriends a traveling lama seeking Enlightenment. Though Kim does not convert to Buddhism or anything close, his fascination with the lama quickly turns to affection and the two remain together for the entire rest of the novel as lama and chela (disciple). Kim starts questioning his place in Indian society as an Indian with Irish parents who are now deceased ...more
