Somehow this passed me by as a teenager, and I very much wonder what my opinion of it would have been then versus reading it now as a happily domesticated adult. I definitely don't get the "tragic love story" vibe, but instead get a much more intense portrait of a ramping spiral of cruelty. As a modern reader it's hard to disconnect myself from the desire to hustle all of the characters off to some intense talk therapy, but it's easy to see how Bronte's vision was groundbreaking in her era. ...more
