Get ye to an editor, Mr. Collins!
Known as the first detective novel, Collins does a nice job of crafting the first book in the genre. There's plenty of twists and turns, and the characters are for the most part interesting, but the book does go on forever. It was originally written in serial form, which is understandable, but still....
Also, I didn't find the ending to be very satisfying.
All in all a solid read, but The Woman in White is much better and a good place to start if you are new to Co ...more

When I read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins I loved it. In fact, it is up there with my all time favourite books. Consequently, I think I perhaps expected too much from this book as The Woman in White was a very hard act to follow.
