I hate when people try to compare this to the movies. Apart from the silent movie they have nothing to do with this story, except that the characters and the plot are almost the same. Same goes with the musical. Although enjoyable as its own, it has a completely different approach to the situation. The book just has more depth and is overall a great gothic twist of the basic Beauty and the Beast folklore. It's not scary for modern readers, yet it is a wonderful and twisted love story. Why do people in classics stories always have exciting romance? XD
This book is very absurd but in a good way, reminds me a bit of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Same gothic vibes, same intense love story, same mysterious outsider - all those elements that make a book classics :)
Also, reading The Phantom of The Opera made me want to watch the musical!

This book was okay. The musical is a lot better though, it is definitely a lot better with songs.

Slow to begin and end, but worth it for the middle.
