Tom Jones is an inescapable masterpiece, one of the small company of books no reader with any genuine interest in English Literature can go through life without reading. It might be possible to live and die quite happily and never finish "The Fairie Queene"; it might even be positive advantage to pass through the world ignorant of "The Excursion". But the reader who cuts himself off from the marvellous world of Tom Jones suffers a deprivation all the other novels in English won't make up for. Th ...more
