Anna, you're going to hate me for only giving it 3 stars... but I don't know. After The Painted Veil and Up At the Villa, it just... didn't seem as enchanting. The protagonist (whose name escapes me) was too much of a Holden Caulfield "woe is I" character for me. Give me resilience rather than pity. ...more

I've always liked W. Somerset Maugham, but this book blows the rest of his oeuvre out of the water. It's an ultra-Bildungsroman, a superman among the American/British-in-Europe books (think A Room with a View or Tender is the Night), an intriguing, unusual love story. ...more
