This book by Dickens is well worth the read of its 1000+ pages. It opens up with an introduction to the longest running and most expensive lawsuit that the English community has ever seen. It takes off from there and provides numerous twists and turns that makes this novel one of Dickens' more exciting reads.
This book also introduced the notion of a "growlery" (which we all must get) and the first and likely only time that a character "spontaneously combusts" in a book.

All I can say is thank GOD this one picks up a tiny amount of steam in its back third, because otherwise this would have had no redeeming value for me whatsoever. It is to be expected that Dickens cries out for the hack and slash of a modern editor's pen, but compared to Great Expectations, this gets to be a serious snoozefest in many places. If character-driven's your thing you may find more to like here than I did, but readers looking for anything resembling a plot should think long and hard b
