I very seldom give a book a rating of 5 but this one certainly qualifies, despite the fact that it is the author's debut novel. Russian Winter is set against the perfection of ballet, the hardships of life in the Soviet Union after WWII, and the anguish of families lost and found. The author develops a wonderful narrative that of deception and betrayal that takes in great strands of literary and political history. Entertaining, time not wasted really, this book. I like the eccentric, minor character of Zoltan, one of my favorite names. The dreariest parts are the ones about Drew and her clichéd longing for love. But this is a fine story to get lost in, especially Nina's story in 1950s Soviet Russia. At least I had a good time with it.

This novel includes so many things that I love. Ballet, stories of Russia, historical elements, and mystery. And what few women do not like jewels? This book has that as well.
