I think everyone knows the basic story line which is what really ruined the story for me. It's designed to build suspense and doesn't give away the secret that everyone knows until the very end of the book. Would have been a lot more shocking if I didn't know the big surprise.

The afterward is particularly good in creating a starting point for a dialog about this book. The language tires me, but that is often the case with books written in the 1800s. Well worth the investment of an afternoon to read this classic.
“…I have been made to learn that the doom and burden of our life is bound for ever on man’s shoulders, and when the attempt is made to cast it off, it but returns upon us with more unfamiliar and more awful pressure.”

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are well-known characters, but I had never actually read Robert Louis Stevenson’s story until today. It’s a somewhat dark story about clever Dr. Jekyll who discovers a concoction that changes him into a smaller Hulk-type man who has all of Dr. Jekyll’s evil tendencies, instead of the good and bad as most do. It’s got a life lesson warning of greed and lack of discipline. I prefer some of Stevenson’s other works. 3.5 stars!
