Another one of my all-time favorites. I don't know how I stumbled on this book, but its worth the 955 pages (yeah really!).
What I liked best about this book is the exploration of the main characters alienation. He is neither British nor Indian, Christian, Muslim or Hindu, he's everything and nothing all at once. Actually I might recommend this book if you liked Life of Pi. Although I would say that this is a much more thorough and interesting tale.

Even though this novel is quite long, it makes quick reading as the setting is exotic and the plot full of adventure. This is one of the best pieces of historical fiction I have read. I will be reading this one again!
This is one of my all-time favorite books which inspired me to start writing historical fiction and instilled me with a longing to see India. While the last part, set in Afghanistan, could easily have been left out, for me it's still as good as historical fiction possibly gets.
